John McCain's as a VPOTUS-like candidate ...

When I saw a CBS News article about John McCain running as a VPOTUS-like candidate in 2008, I didn't even know what the acronym "VPOTUS" (Vice President of the United States) stood for. And now that I do, I fail to see how CBS or anyone else would classify McCain as a "VPOTUS-like" candidate.

I knew John McCain's father, Admiral John McCain Sr. -- I was actually an employee of CINCPAC while at 7th Air Force at Tan San Nhut Air base in Vietnam -- and I can assure you that he is neither a clone of his father nor a VPOTUS-like anything! [For the record, Admiral McCain was an extremely short, gruff (and tough!) person who could scare you simply by asking, "Do you have something to say, Mr. Ryan?" He was also a very sharp naval officer -- one of the best ever.]

As regards John McCain Jr. being VPOTUS-like, well ... he surely won't draw Republicans to his candidacy, for one thing -- as would almost any ordinary VP -- and he is on the exact opposite of George W. Bush's position on almost every issue -- excepting the Iraq War, of course -- and was a real hero in standing up against the illegal torture programs at both Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib. His lengthy stay at the "Hanoi Hilton" was partially the reason for that and his personal pristine morality was clearly a part of it too.

Not much else on this posting except to mention a little-known fact. His father (we called him "the old man") refused to allow persons like myself (or any junior -- or senior -- officer or civilian at CINCPAC) to even ask "how is your son doing?" or "have you heard anything lately from your son?" during his time as a prisoner in North Vietnam. It was a very difficult time for John McCain Jr.'s entire family, as one would expect.

I don't agree with Senator McCain's views on the war in Iraq, but look upon him as a genuine "hero" among the politicians in Washington, DC these days. And I hate to even use his name in the same sentence with the likes of the real VPOTUS who has promised America that he will not run for president ... ever!
