Lt. Cmdr. Charles Swift: This year's Independence Day "Hero"

Lt.Cmdr. Charles Swift is my choice for this year's top gun in the US military. Who's Charles Swift, you ask?

Well, he's the guy who, as a lawyer for Saddam's former driver, had to compare President Bush with King George during the Hamdan vs. Rumsfeld shebang before the Supreme Court -- and won the case! That was last week's high point, in my opinion, and will cause Bush's arrogance as regards Gitmo (Guantanamo) to have some tough days ahead. Indeed, it may put a stop to the shameless ignoring (not ignorance, I don't think) of our Constitution, the Geneva Conventions and the Uniform Military Code of Justice by our President and his closest minders -- uhh ... I meant closest advisors.

Then again ... probably not.

Of course, Commander Swift's military career is likely over -- or, at best, in a suspended state of animation, but he's a good reminder of Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men (not necessarily of TC in Top Gun) and surely President Bush's comments on the case after his "military tribunals" at Gitmo went up in smoke were a great reminder of Jack Nicholson's portrayal at the conclusion of "A Few Good Men."

And, if we get nothing else on our television sets in Ocean Shores, we do get two channels of CSPAN. Watching this young man speak was like ... well, get to see it, if it is replayed during the coming weeks -- maybe it will be replayed today, July 4. Very appropriate!

Surely, Charles Swift is One Good Man!
