Why not "Pelosi and Obama" for the 2008 ticket?
I already said a few nice things about Barack Obama last week, so maybe a word or two about Ms. Nancy Pelosi is in order here.
And it's not that I'm pushing persons like Al Gore, Hillary Clinton and John Kerry, et. al. aside to push her to the front of the line; it's that a series of events could easily put her right at the top without her doing a thing other than the fine job she's been doing as House Minority Leader.
Consider the following sequence of events: (1) Patrick Fitzgerald indicts Richard Cheney just ahead of the 2006 mid-term elections; (2) Cheney steps down as the "graceful" thing to do, of course; (3) the Democrats win both houses of Congress in November; (4) before Bush has an opportunity to nominate Condoleezza Rice as the new Vice President, impeachment hearings begin in the House of Representatives; (5) Bush steps down in disgust; (6) the new Speaker of the House (Nancy Pelosi) becomes President since she's "next in line"; (7) Nancy Pelosi nominates Barack Obama to be her Vice President to finish out the term through 2008.
Okay, okay ... that is an unlikely scenario -- but not an impossible one!
But there are variations: Cheney could step down for health reasons after the mid-term elections, for example -- and the Democrats could still take over Congress theoretically, even without a Fitzgerald indictment of Cheney ahead of time.
Basically the result would be the same.
Or Bush could be impeached and removed from office in 2007 and Cheney would become President -- and that wouldn't last long, I don't think, and guess who would be second in line during that period of time? Right! Her initials are N.P.!!
Again, I state: Basically the result would be the same.
But consider Nancy Pelosi on her own merits: She has stood fearlessly against the war in Iraq from the outset; she has defended Social Security from before the time that Bush even took office; she was the ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee and, with the smarts of anyone who would be chosen as an honorary board member of the National Organization of Italian American women, she has pointed out the unconstitutionality of several of Bush's crazy and intrusive programs (eavesdropping without warrants, Patriot Act, the Gulag at Guantanamo, etc.); she was a member of the Progressive Caucus until she became the minority Leader; she's one TOUGH woman ... and not one to take lightly.
And oh yes, she stood firm in the recent vote in the House against continuing this awful war/occupation (essentially not going along with the GOP in endorsing Bush's policies there) and rallied the Democrats behind her. We lost, but she held the Democrats in line.
Compare her all-American stand in the House of Representatives with that of GWB's lap dog, Joe Lieberman, in the Senate.
I would personally be proud to vote for Pelosi for President in 2008 and I kinda like the idea of a Pelosi-Obama ticket.
Now, I have to convince my alter ego, Richard in Connecticut, that she would be not only a good choice to be a good President, but could beat the pants off any Republican (including Condi!) that they might put up against her. In fact, Obama's inclusion on the ticket would negate Condi's biggest asset.
Whadya think?

Todd --
Yeh, you're right! Too good to even allow the mind to wander in that direction. They'd turn so much around that Americans' heads would spin through about 2015! Pelosi can be a tiger (she's the "tough cop") and Obama would be the "nice cop" during contentious debates, etc. I only wish Nancy hadn't supported the Patriot Act early on, but then, we were all fooled by the lies said to us following 9/11.
Cheers -- MWN (Joe)
