Would I have done the same ... if I had been born in Iraq?
We all know that Saddam Hussein was a tyrant and very evil person. But what if I, Mediawingnuts, had been born in Iraq and worked hard so as to become Saddam's foreign minister as a Roman Catholic? I was a Roman Catholic early in my life and know that I was trained in my religion to obey authority and indeed, was taught to "love" Pope Pius whom we now know supported both Hitler and Mussolini during the runup to World War II. In fact, I belonged to the only parish in America (or so I was told), St. Scholastica, that was directly under the Vatican and not under the bishop in Detroit, Michigan where I lived.
Now, consider Tariq Aziz (upper left) who was a very diplomatic and careful foreign minister whom we all became used to seeing on television. He too was a Roman Catholic (not a separate sect of Catholicism even) and was caught in the middle, so to speak, between the tyrant, Saddam, and persons like us whom he addressed regularly on television. He supported the regime in Iraq and yes, it was murdering its own citizens -- even during the twelve years that we had it "contained," before the invasion of 2003, although not to the extent that our "puppet" Shiite militias are murdering civilians today -- at least not after we put his country under complete containment (no-fly zones in the north and south, sanctions, inspections, etc.) after 1991.
At the same time, he (like his boss, Saddam) feared and refused to cooperate in the least with the al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden, and was devastated (his words -- which might be self-serving, I admit) by the attacks against America on 9/11. In the time since, he has been under detention (below) wearing the familiar orange jumpsuit prison garb that we supply.
The two questions I ask are:
1. In his position -- were I unlucky enough to have been born and raised as a Roman Catholic Iraqi -- would I have done differently than he did?
and
2. How should we deal with him now?
Tough questions for me to even contemplate, less answer.

hi,
i was catholic before. my family is.
in catholicism we learn respect the other and never kill. Of course some do but then no way to go paradise ;) even they do for a "good" (for them) reason.
kill his own country people is even worst to my eyes.
hopefully the big murders will stop soon. but i don't think for better when french go to liban... my country never does it good. The politicians will make a mafia exist and get the most of the country. It's french culture.
oh before i forget today i read in le monde very bad words about racism in usa, something like "the american racism, the monster ready to show".. it's after katrina: here theyspeak so much about black people bad treated. "Funny" when you know what they do here and worst what France is doing in Africa (Rwanda had a lot to do with french support).
take care

I think you're right!
I did go over to your website and have read three or four of your postings. Excellent English, by the way, and i left a comment that states that I will be back for a visit again soon -- to your blog -- not to France!
Anyway, don't count on the killing to stop soon; it's like chocolates -- very addictive to those who are running the military ... on all sides.
Have a nice weekend.
Are they "celebrating" the fifth anniversary of 9/11 in France?
Cheers

hi,
not really celebrating but the two most important channels were making a special night program about it. The one i saw was a BBC movie: nice work like ofen from BBC. Tonight i go see "world trade center" the movie.
People here are of course sad about what happened but what is saying Sarkozy about it is a big lie! he is in NY actually. Most people see US like imperialist country. But here so few people know about what is doing france that they always believe french come from heaven. If you come to Paris, you will see from the first sight ;)
About your career i am really impressed. You are a exceptional succesful, in completely opposite of mine. My father was in germany and i lived 3 years in Berlin. It was wonderful moments and i remember well the american part at the first years of 80s.
About journalism i was working in a association about information. To know what is doing France in Africa.
Thank you to have read my blog and spend some of your precious time, especially you seem to have a big family :)
take a good care,
with lot respect

Sadly, truth and lies are intertwined in a way that no one really knows the truth ... the real truth. Surely, the al-Qaida was involvrd, but who else?
I don't know, but have ideas.
Cheers
