White House does about face ... will follow Geneva Conventions at Gitmo!

Three cheers for our side! Thanks to the Supreme Court's (correct) ruling last week, the White House (that's the President!) backed down and announced that the "enemy combatants" being held at Guantanamo will be afforded rights in accordance with the Geneva Conventions.

I have to give credit and applause to CBS/AP for the nice picture/collage shown above. It nicely shows that the prisoners at Guantanamo (or held anywhere outside of the US) are on the same side of the "fence" that protects all of our rights.

To be honest, I don't know all of what that entails, but it's got to mean that there will be no out and out torture of prisoners there and that they will be tried in accordance with proper laws. The specific provision of the Geneva Conventions that was cited by the Supreme Court as applying to the suspected terrorists at Guantanamo reads as follows, "requires humane treatment of captured combatants and requires trials with judicial guarantees recognized as indispensable by civilized people."

Andrew Cohen, a CBS news analyst reminded the White House that this is not all bad; he said, "Now, arguably, our own soldiers around the world have a better chance to gain the protection of the Geneva Conventions from enemy states." Obviously we are fighting persons with little or no conscience, but, at least, we can ask that our boys and girls be treated the same or better than we treat prisoners.

Thank you Supreme Court ... and now, thank you, Mr. President!
