Did one of you ask, "What is/are five sigmas?"

Oh yes, while I'm at it ... here's a photo that one of the CERN scientists took of the proton collision with his Android Tablet. 

The answer in a sentence is that five sigma significance is a probability of 0.000028% that the Higgs Boson is a false assumption, but the data suggests it anyway. I'd recommend you read the article at an older notification of the Higgs work at CERN. . . . and then read the BBC article at this more recent article published by BBC News. for an update. Of course the conference in Melbourne, Australia next month will provide the last--well, next to last anyway--word on the matter (no pun intended)! The diagram below shows the general meaning behind "sigma."

Higgs-Boson Simply Won't Go Away ... but is it Five Sigmas?

As you are undoubtedly aware, the Higgs Boson appears to have been found over the weekend. The proton smasher (a.k.a. Large Hadron Collider or simply LHC) has isolated what appears to be on the order of a dozen HB particles over there on the border of France and Switzerland. The only question left is a statistical one--is it proof of the existence of the Higgs-Boson to a certainty of five sigmas? Stay tuned for updates . . .

Mitt Romney and Condoleezza Rice Not that I think Condi would say, "Yes!" mind you, but with Willard's (Mitt's) lack of foreign affairs experience, this may be his only hope come November when the world will be tilting ever closer to a war in the Middle East.

Lest we forget ...

Good grief, it's that anniversary again! What exactly did the "D" in "D-Day" signify? I've read or heard that it stood for "Disembarkment," but don't really know. In my war-gaming past, we used H-Hour and D-Day with the the "H" and "D" simply standing as nothing in particular. Only guessing, but I'll bet that the Army planners back in WWII used it in more in that manner since for more than six decades I've never heard or read anything definitive.
