Hope 2008 has been kind so far, Dr. Joe! Currently living right down the road from Livonia in Lansing, the onslaught of rhetoric from the candidates has been if full-force for the past week. certainly none of us could ever argue about McCain's service to the USA. However, I find that many Americans--especially senior citizens--have forgotten the role McCain played in the S&L scandal and his membership in the Keating 5. McCain COULD have stopped the S&L debacle dead in its tracks, but instead chose to allow the S&Ls to continue their theft of savings accounts. Countless investors lost their entire life savings and the taxpayers were forced to bail out the S&Ls. Nothing like taking care of his corporate buddies. That alone is reason enough to eliminate McCain from contention. Add in his "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" comments and the fact that he cheated on his first wife while she was in the hospital with a very serious ailment...Well...You get the point. McCain isn't even close to Presidential material.
Sadly, I was unaware of the matters about which you commented. They are sad, if true, and would certainly change my mind about Admral McCain's son.
The S & L matter is one of those sad events in our political history for which no easy answers come to mind.
His strong and hawkish views about Iran (along with all of the Republicans, unfortunately) and strong push for the so-called "surge" are problems too.
His personal life, although not something to brag about, is just that--a "personal" matter.
Thanks for the comments.
Joe
I agree with your "personal affairs" comment to a certain extent, but the past 20 years of U.S. politics has seen the exponential growth of partisanship and political attacks. The U.S. spent almost $50 million of taxpayer money investigating the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky affair which, of course, should have been a personal matter between Bill and Hillary. What a waste of taxpayer money!
I do however, believe that the morals and ethics that a candidate follows in his/her personal life can be a precursor as to how he/she will conduct themself in the office of the President. McCain bailed and cheated on his wife when she was in the hospital with a serious illness--when she needed him most--and found himself a new "trophy" wife. Guiliani cheated on and lied to his first two wives. If they treat their wives--whom they supposedly loved--in that manner, how will they treat you and I?
Maybe I am being unrealistic in expecting my President--the most powerful person in the world--to behave in an ethical, moral, and honest manner both inside and outside the Oval Office?
